“My Mum and Dad were in this rock band together.  They smoked a ton of dope, went out on the hippie trail, had loads of adventures, and ended up starting this free love commune in Bangladesh."

My eldest son’s description of how his parents met , overheard at a party, was inaccurate in just about every detail; yet it had a certain truth, giving coherence and unity to experiences that had seemed unconnected.  Inspired by my son's insight, I tried writing about those years - the four between my 25th and 29th birthdays. In 2002 I published a version of the result on the net.

Feedback was positive, and helpful, and having been cut to just over half the length, the “Shantiluyah quartet” is the outcome.  ROCKY FOUNDATIONS, its first part, stands very much as a novel in its own right, a faithful if fictionalised account of the last days of a promising avant-garde rock band, and how its fall-out led its hero JG, still just about in partnership with the lovely Sarah, into adventures even more challenging in the books that follow.

For, yes, there was indeed a rock band – of sorts. Crabapple is the fictional name of real-life rock/jazz fusion band CMU, whose first album “Open Spaces” has recently become available from www.esotericrecordings.com.  However, true to the Bildungsroman genre, Rocky Foundations is not primarily about the band.  This is really just the backdrop to how the protagonist 'became a man', with all the ambiguities, spiritual and carnal, that are implied in that simple three-letter word.
